Memphis Break-Ins and Home Security
Memphis Police Department reported a 27 percent decrease in Part I crime in 2025, a 26 percent decrease in murders, and fewer than 200 homicides for the first time since 2019. Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis and Mayor Paul Young have talked about that citywide mix. It is not a reason to leave a Cooper-Young side door unlocked on a Tuesday while you sit Downtown.
What Memphis finished 2025 with
Citywide, Part I crime fell 27 percent in 2025 and murders fell 26 percent, with homicides under 200 for the first time since 2019, according to Memphis Police Department figures. Those counts mix Cooper-Young, Midtown, Downtown, East Memphis, Whitehaven, and Cordova. A quieter street is not 24/7 monitoring, and a neighbor on the porch is not an ADT operator. We do not publish neighborhood crime rates.
Direction on the citywide total is real. Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis and Mayor Paul Young have both spoken to the 2025 drop. The reason people still order is occupancy: porch packages, a tried door, and houses that sit empty after drop-off or a commute on I-40 or I-240.
Boxes on Cooper-Young, Midtown, and East Memphis porches
Walkable streets are why people add a doorbell. Cooper-Young, Midtown, South Main, and Harbor Town houses collect boxes on porches while owners are at work, on I-240, or Downtown. A camera you check yourself is useful. It is not the same as ADT calling you when a door opens.
The system is for the hours no one is looking out the window — not a claim that Germantown or Collierville is dangerous.
Empty houses after school drop-off and the ring commute
Memphis-Shelby County Schools drop-off empties in-city two-stories. Germantown Municipal, Collierville, Bartlett City, Arlington, Lakeland, and Millington empty the rest of the map until pickup. A Medical District shift empties Midtown and Cooper-Young doors the same way. That is when people want the system armed.
What people actually order after a missing box or a leftover keypad
Door and window sensors, including the garage and any extra unit if you have one. A doorbell camera if packages sit out front. Outdoor cameras if the driveway holds a car overnight. Cellular backup so the panel still reaches ADT when MLGW or Wi-Fi drops. That is the Memphis order, not a twelve-camera quote unless you ask for one.

Is Memphis “safe enough” to skip monitoring?
Citywide Part I crime and murders were down in that 2025 count. Porch theft and empty houses did not take the year off. Monitoring is for the hours you commute, work a Medical District shift, or leave for school drop-off — not a verdict on your ZIP.
Do quieter streets like Germantown still order ADT?
Yes. Germantown, East Memphis, Collierville, and Bartlett orders are usually school-day empties, leftover keypads, and packages on the porch. Same ADT watch as Cooper-Young. Independent cities are not Memphis Police. We name the desk from the ZIP. We do not invent neighborhood crime rates.
Will Memphis police come if the alarm trips?
ADT can request help based on the alert type. Inside the city that is typically Memphis Police Department. Germantown, Collierville, Bartlett, and other cities dispatch differently. Confirm the office from your ZIP. City of Memphis Chapter 9-16 requires a Metro Alarm Office permit — confirm (901) 636-6380.
